Care for a new tree
Water, water, water! But not too much.

  1. Immediately after your tree has been planted, be sure to water it deeply every day.
  2. Watering deeply means making sure that the water reaches down to the roots. The best way to achieve this is by watering slowly over a longer period of time. Sprinklers are great for watering gardens and lawns, but not for trees! A sprinkler will spray water on the trunk and the leaves, but you want water to reach the roots. And unlike lawns, trees need water less frequently but in greater quantities – a sprinkler system that’s set up to keep your lawn green won’t meet the needs of a newly-planted tree.
  3. We recommend a drip irrigation system, a soaker hose, or a garden hose – anything that will emit water slowly and for a long time.
  4. Don’t water near the trunk. Instead, water in the area of the root ball and then the area around it. This will encourage the roots to reach outwards.

Care For Your New Grass

Water Your New Grass:
For newly seeded lawns, set sprinklers to mist the surface four times a day, beginning at 7 A.M. and finishing at 6 P.M. Keep the seedbed moist, but not saturated, to a depth of 1- to 2-inches.

As seedlings grow to a height of 2-inches, reduce the frequency but increase the depth of watering.

Mowing Your New Grass.
Begin mowing after the grass has grown to a height of 3 or 4 inches —before it falls over in a slight breeze. Set the throttle of your mower on low to help prevent seedlings from uprooting. For your first mowing, remove just enough (1/2- to 3/4-inch) to give your lawn an even appearance. Next time, cut to the maximum height recommended for your type of grass, but do not remove more than 30% of the blade in any single mowing. Once sprigs and plugs are established, regular mowing will encourage lateral spreading.

What People Say About Cook's Landscaping

We are so pleased with our new lawn. Jim made sure we knew the best way to water it and checked on it every couple days as it grew. We now have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood.

Jim has mowed our lawn for about 5 years. A few years ago, I thought I would try to save some money and hired someone else. The service was nowhere near what we had with Jim. After one season I called Jim and he graciously took me back on as a customer. We won't make that mistake again.

- Eli P.
I hired Cook's Landscaping to spruce up the old landscaping at our new house. I can't believe how different is looked once he and his team were done with it. They trimmed up a lot of overgrown things and added the plants that I brought from my old house. It looks just the way I pictured it in my head...just beautiful. I'm very happy with the work.
